THE SUPER BOWL
Analysis 1
A few of my friends at school used to like it.
Used to = something that was true in the past
- I used to play a lot of basketball at school
- They used to come here a lot
Generally speaking, people in the U.K. don’t follow American football.
Follow = to know what is happening
- I don’t really follow what it happening in American politics
- I follow their results but I’m not a big fan
They’re trying to make the game more international and it’s going to be interesting to see how they take that and if this actually works out.
Work out = to be successful
- I don’t think this plan is going to work out.
- This is never going to work out!
Because I’ve been living in America for 5 years now, I’ve started to really get into the game.
Present Perfect Continuous = action that started in the past and continues in the present.
- I’ve been teaching since 2008
- I’ve been in America since 2010 (note: this is the present perfect simple because ‘to be’ is a non-continuous verb)
Because I’ve been living in America for 5 years now, I’ve started to really get into the game.
Get into something = to become more interested in something (hobby)
- My dad is getting into yoga
- Kate is never going to get into football
I’ve watched about 6 Super Bowls in total too.
Present perfect: how many / much (until now)
- I’ve had six cups of tea today
- How many times have you been to France?
It’s really brought people together
Bring together = unite people
- The protests have brought everyone together
- The scandal has brought people together
