Learn English Emotions Sentences

In this lesson, you’re going to learn lots of English phrases and expressions that will better help you express how you’re feeling.

This is an important area of English to learn because we constantly talk about our emotions. For example, we’ll say:

  • I feel great today
  • I’m scared of…
  • Do you trust him?

1. Fear

The most common phrase here is this: to be scared of something. For example: I’m scared of heights (phobia). Here are more examples:

  • Standing on the edge of that building was scary
  • I was so scared when I was on that building
  • I’m terrified of heights
  • It freaks me out (American)
  • I was scared to death

2. Anger

  • I’m really angry about what he did
  • It makes me so mad when people
  • I can’t believe you did that – I’m so upset (similar to sadness)

3. Sadness

  • I’m sad that we lost today
  • I’m distraught that Preston lost today
  • I’m gutted that I didn’t get the job

4. Joy

  • I’m happy that you came
  • I’m so happy you came to the party
  • Will you be happier if you quit your job?
  • I’m pumped about this game!
  • I’m stoked
  • I’m glad you came
  • Aren’t you glad you came now?

5. Surprise

  • I’m surprised he bought that car
  • It’s surprising – I’m shocked she did that
  • I can’t believe it (intonation)

6. Trust

  • I trust him
  • I should never have trusted her
  • Do you think I should trust them?
  • I don’t think he’s very trustworthy

7. Anticipation

  • I’m really looking forward to our vacation
  • I can’t wait for our vacation
  • I’m excited about our vacation
  • Are you excited about it?
  • To be honest, I’m not looking forward to seeing them later

8. Shame

  • I feel bad about what I did/I said
  • Do you feel bad about it?
  • I feel terrible for doing that
  • I just want to hide

9. Boredom

  • I am so bored
  • I’m bored of this book now
  • This book is boring
